Devotion ArchiveWeek of February 22, 2010“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me . . . My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:14, 27-28 These words from the book of John are some of my favorite in the Bible. In our Screenside Chats, we are looking at the beautiful pictures that Jesus shows us in these words, focusing on a different picture each week. My hand muscles have increased over the past few years. I am certain I know why. I have made many journeys across busy parking lots with my 4 year old daughter. When we walk together across these vast asphalt plains of moving vehicles, my eyes are scanning left and right for oncoming traffic while my hand is gripping my daughter’s hand tightly. When potential danger is around, my Daddy instincts make me clutch her little hand and not let go. Jesus feels the same way about you and me, his little sheep. As we traverse across a constant traffic flow of trials and temptations, he holds us by the hand. As he said in the text above “no one can snatch them out of my hand.” Why is this so? Because there are nail marks in Jesus’ hands from the cross. Those nail marks mean that he gave his life for you. That you are his child. That he loves you. That he will walk with you through anything and everything that passes in front of you in this brief journey of life. And his nail marked hands will not let go of you. His hands will never fail. His hands will hold onto you through every day of this life and lead you to eternal life. Look both ways before crossing a street or parking lot today. But take comfort that your Shepherd is also looking ahead for you. He has you by the hand, and he won’t let go. In good hands, just like you, Pastor Jon Bergemann
