Psalm 119:37  “Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your Word.”

When the Titanic began to sink, the relative value of its objects changed quickly.  In a few moments, such things as expensive China or fine clothing became insignificant, while such things as life jackets and life boats became invaluable.

When life sends tragedy our way, the relative value of our possessions can change quickly, as well.  In the face of sickness and death, life-changing challenges and uncertainties, the number of cars or cash, houses or Hummers we have might not seem so important.  At these sinking times, where do we turn our eyes for help?

Our Psalm verse tells us, “Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your Word.”  In the sinking set-backs of life, God’s Word saves.  Why?  Because in that Word we find our worth:  we are precious children of God, bought by the blood of Jesus.  We find our strength:  God is with us forever.  We find our future:  we have an eternity in heaven with Him. In short, we find that we won’t sink but instead can savor the strength of our God now and forever!   How priceless!

Preserved by God, just like you,

Pastor Jon Bergemann
