Devotion ArchiveWeek of April 12, 2010Who is preparing your dinner this evening? You? A family member? A staff at a restaurant? How about God? In Psalm 23, known as the “Good Shepherd Psalm”, God gives us beautiful pictures of his care and love. While we often remember the shepherding pictures from this Psalm, listen to verse 5: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” Notice who is setting the table? It is God! And while God himself won’t personally lay out your silverware or microwave your dinner this evening, he is the one who “prepares a table before you” – that is, promises to bless you and provide for you, even in the midst of adversity and enemies. He is cooking a lifetime’s worth of blessings for you. In fact, everything, yes, everything that he “puts on your plate” in life will be exactly what is best for your spiritual health. Oh, it’s true that some courses might not taste too nice (just as children don’t always enjoy a heaping helping of broccoli or cauliflower). But He promises to use even the difficult parts of life’s dish to direct and strengthen you. So have a seat at His table. Feast on His Word. Savor the blessings that He gives you every day. And rejoice that He will be with you at your table this evening. Sitting at God’s table with you, Pastor Jon Bergemann
